Balos beach a top attraction of Greek natural beauty on Crete.

BALOS laguna beach, together with Elafonisi, is called the most beautiful beach in Crete.

There are more beautiful beaches in Greece but on Crete the biggest island of Greece or in the Mediterranean sea, Balos is a must see. The white sandy beach is located in the far northwest of Crete on the Gramvousa peninsula. The lagoon is located in a beautiful bay between the islet of TIGANI and the GRAMVOUSA peninsula. A thin strip of white (hard) sand ensures that the colors of the sea water in the shallow lagoon show very beautifully and vary from turquoise to azure. The water is nice and warm and crystal clear, ideal for young children.

If you come by boat (from Kissamos + -25 €, or from CHANIA), it will moor in the bay itself and you will have to hike up to enjoy this view. The ferry will stop in between for a visit to the ruins of a dilapidated fortress from where you have a beautiful view.

If you come by car from the holiday home VILLA Maquis you drive in the direction of KISSAMOS to GRAMVOUSA until the access road it is about 1.5 hours. Then follows a 7km long off-road (1 € entrance) which is bad and you arrive at the top of the bay. You have the best view of BALOS bay and islands of Agria Gramvousa and Imeri Gramvousa.

In the summer months it is very busy and we recommend that you arrive there around 10am to avoid the crowds.

The lagoon is part of a NATURA 2000 nature park, where you will find sea turtles (CARETTA CARETTA) and a protected species of seals.
